What Is Repetitive Strain Injury? (How To Get Over It)

What is repetitive strain injury? How does it affect the body and how is it caused? This article will talk about this type of muscle injury and how one can get over it.

What is repetitive strain injury?

This type of injury is caused when a certain muscle is strained due to repetitive use. The muscles, tendons and ligaments affected by this injury may be torn or injured, causing pain and discomfort to the patient.

Causes of repetitive strain injury

If a person feels pain, there is a chance that they are experiencing repetitive muscle strain. The symptoms of this type of injury will be discussed later.

Repetitive actions using the muscle

If the muscle is used over and over again, over a long period, these muscles may experience strain if they are not given any rest. Many pro body builders and work-out enthusiasts believe that breaking muscles will allow them to rebuild themselves and become stronger. However, this should never be done by a person who is working out for the first time.

Muscles should be allowed to rest and rebuild before putting strain on them again. Injury can be caused to muscles that are not allowed to heal first before letting them go through a strenuous workout again.

Poor or wrongly executed technique

When working out, you have to make sure that you are doing the correct form and technique before you even start. If you do the workout set wrongly,  you stand do damage your muscles, tendons and even your bones. Even something as simple as the wrong stance while doing a routine can damage and tear your muscles, moreso, if the  poorly executed technique is done repeatedly.

People who want to lose a lot of weight fast often make the mistake of working out too much. This can cause not only muscle fatigue and mental strain, but it can also damage and tear muscles to the point of injury.repetitive strain injury

Working out should be done with a long-term goal. It is said that Rome was not built in a day. A person should have the same mentality about their overall health and their body. Getting into shape should happen gradually, and one should never have to get injured or sacrifice their health in the process of achieving their dream body goals.

Symptoms of repetitive strain injury

If you experience any of these symptoms, you may be suffering from repetitive strain injury to your muscles.

Feeling an ache in your muscles after you walk a long distance or after a workout session is normal. However, if the aching does not go away even after hours of resting, there may be something more serious going on internally.

Pulsing pain

Pain can be used as a sign to know that something is wrong. If you feel pain, especially pulsing pain, you may need to see a doctor.

Tingling in the extremities

A tingling feeling may be your body’s way of telling you to let your muscles have a rest. This feeling may be described to be similar to small pins and needles pricking your skin, giving you that tingly sensation.

If you do not feel as strong as you did before, and feel weakness in your muscles, this may also be a sign of repetitive strain injury. Weakness could mean that your muscles are torn and may not have enough strength to function properly.

All of these symptoms may start out at mild degrees of frequency and become more and more intense with the continued overuse of the muscles.

Treatment options

Unfortunately, there is no instant solution to cure repetitive strain injuries. Muscles will heal over time, as long as they are given enough rest. The most immediate treatment that can be done is called the “RICE” treatment. This can be used to treat all kinds of muscle and ligament injuries. RICE is an acronym that stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. These can all help cure and relieve the pain associated with muscle injuries.

The most important part of RICE is rest. Resting the muscle will give it a chance to repair itself and heal. If more stress is put on it, the healing process will happen slower. There are even chances that healing will not occur and the injury will worsen.

Putting ice on the injury site will relieve pain that is caused by the torn muscles. If there is any swelling because of this, the swelling will go down because of the ice as well.

Compression stockings or pants will help the veins in the affected area have better blood flow. This will hasten the healing process and also give better support to the muscle as it repairs.

Elevating the affected muscle will allow the muscle to relax. It will also promote better circulation of the blood to the muscle that needs to heal.

RICE is extremely effective if it is used 24 to 48 hours after the injury is sustained.

Prevention techniques

Instead of trying to find a cure for your repetitive strain injury, it is better to try to prevent it instead. Here are a few prevention techniques that you can try to stop muscle strain from happening.

Take a break

Knowing when you are tired and taking a break is crucial. When you give your muscles ample time to rest, they will be able to repair themselves and come back stronger the next time around.

Proper execution

If you enjoy working out, it is important that you make sure you are doing the exercise properly. There are usually trainers at the gym who can help you make sure you are doing things right. If you do not have access to a trainer, there are many videos that have been uploaded on the internet that cater to this problem. These videos will teach you where the stress should be felt, and which muscles are supposed to be doing the exercise.

Final thoughts

Repetitive strain injuries happen because of the overuse of muscles. If you enjoy working out, you should allow yourself to have at least one to two days rest in between a serious work-out session. This will help you avoid damaging your muscles in the process of trying to become leaner and stronger.
