RICE is an acronym that stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. These can all help cure and relieve the pain associated with muscle injuries.

Rest

The most important part of RICE is rest. Resting the muscle will give it a chance to repair itself and heal. If more stress is put on it, the healing process will happen slower. There are even chances that healing will not occur and the injury will worsen.

Ice

Putting ice on the injury site will relieve pain that is caused by the torn muscles. If there is any swelling because of this, the swelling will go down because of the ice as well.

Compression

Compression stockings or pants will help the veins in the affected area have better blood flow. This will hasten the healing process and also give better support to the muscle as it repairs.

Elevation

Elevating the affected muscle will allow the muscle to relax. It will also promote better circulation of the blood to the muscle that needs to heal.

RICE is extremely effective if it is used 24 to 48 hours after the injury is sustained.
